Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) member Abhijeet Dipke has publicly apologised to singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh after a controversy over comments about the singer’s response to student protests and the mocking of his film Satluj. The apology came after Dosanjh addressed the issue during his concert at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Friday evening.
The dispute began after Dosanjh faced criticism for responding to a fan’s question about protests over the alleged NEET examination paper leak by saying, “I am just an artist.” His response drew criticism from Dipke, who accused the singer of hypocrisy, arguing that his public image and work in politically themed films did not match his response to the protests.
The controversy intensified after Dipke mocked Satluj, a film associated with Dosanjh. During his Delhi performance, the singer addressed the criticism without directly naming Dipke or CJP. Dosanjh said that no one should teach Punjabis how to fight and criticised the public mocking of his film.
Following the remarks, Dipke issued an apology on Instagram and asked Dosanjh to forgive him, describing himself as the singer’s younger brother. His public apology followed the singer’s decision to respond to the controversy in front of concertgoers.
The episode has drawn attention to the debate over the expectations placed on celebrities to speak on political and social issues. While some fans expect prominent artists to use their platforms to address public concerns, others believe artists should have the freedom to decide when and how they engage with political matters.
The disagreement also highlights how comments made online or during public events can escalate into wider controversies, particularly when they involve well-known entertainers and politically sensitive issues.
