Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) convenor Abhijeet Dipke on Monday, October 12, questioned the Narendra Modi government over its support for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as demands for the poll panel chief’s resignation continued following controversy over electoral roll revisions.
In a post on X, Dipke alleged that young people, journalists and MPs had faced police action in Delhi. He questioned why Kumar was being protected by the government, linking his remarks to the ongoing dispute over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. His comments reflected the CJP’s criticism of the revision process and its demand for greater accountability from the poll panel.
Dipke, along with CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, was placed under preventive detention at Delhi airport ahead of the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. According to the report, the three were released on Sunday on the condition that they would not breach the peace for one year.
After his release, Dipke travelled to his native village of Santuk Pimpri in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district. The protest had been called to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision exercise.
Authorities had denied permission for the demonstration, citing public-order and traffic concerns. Security arrangements and transport restrictions in the national capital also drew criticism from the CJP and other protesters, who questioned the limits placed on peaceful assembly.
The Election Commission’s SIR process has become a point of political dispute, with the CJP and opposition parties alleging irregularities and calling for accountability. These remain allegations raised by the protesters, rather than findings established in the supplied report.
