Germany has around 70,000 Indian students in 2026, reflecting the country's growing appeal as a destination for higher education, research and career opportunities. Indian Ambassador to Germany Ajit Vinayak Gupte said the number of Indian students has increased significantly in recent years, rising from approximately 25,000 six years ago to 50,000 in 2024.

Speaking to NDTV, Gupte attributed this growth to the range of courses offered by German universities, relatively affordable education and opportunities to find employment after graduation. He said more than 60,000 Indians have moved to Germany annually over the past two years, with many arriving to study and subsequently pursue careers.

According to the ambassador, tuition fees at some German state universities can be as low as 750 euros per semester. Part-time work opportunities also help students manage their expenses. Learning German can further improve employment prospects, particularly as Germany faces demographic challenges and demand for skilled workers.

Research opportunities are another major attraction. Indian students and researchers have highlighted access to grants, laboratory facilities, startup support and funding as important reasons for choosing German institutions. Some also value the social security benefits and structured timelines available for research projects.

However, students say India needs stronger research funding, better laboratory infrastructure and more opportunities across disciplines to encourage researchers abroad to return. One student called for expanding the Prime Minister's Research Chair Scheme, arguing that its limited number of positions could restrict its reach.

The ambassador also highlighted growing economic ties between India and Germany. He cited German investment commitments in India and said stronger trade relations could create further opportunities.

Germany's combination of education, research support and employment prospects continues to attract Indian students seeking international experience and long-term career development.
