Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, its latest small artificial intelligence model, designed to handle high-volume tasks where speed and cost efficiency are priorities. Announced on October 7, the model is the third addition to the company’s Claude 5.5 family in less than a month, as Anthropic reportedly prepares for a potential initial public offering.
The company describes Haiku 5.5 as its fastest and most capable small model to date. It is designed for repetitive workloads such as summarisation, data extraction, classification, database queries and customer support. Developers can also use it as a supporting agent alongside larger models for coding tasks and browser-based activities.
Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs around 75% less to run on average than its predecessor, Haiku 4.5. For API requests with prompts of up to 100,000 tokens, input costs $0.10 per million tokens and output costs $0.50 per million tokens. Higher prices apply to longer prompts.
The company has also reduced the price of cached input tokens for Claude Sonnet 5.5 by 50%, a change it says can lower costs for many agent-based tasks. Haiku 5.5 is available through Claude and the company’s API platform, as well as major cloud services including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.
The launch reflects growing demand for AI systems that can perform routine tasks quickly without the expense of larger models. While Haiku 5.5 is intended for speed-sensitive workloads, Anthropic says its Sonnet and Opus models remain better suited to more complex coding and reasoning tasks.
