Apple Music is getting a significant audio upgrade on Apple TV 4K, with tvOS 27 adding support for high-resolution lossless audio. The update is designed to preserve more detail from original recordings, giving subscribers a higher-quality listening option on compatible home audio systems.
Apple announced the feature as part of its latest software updates. Hi-Res Lossless support is available on Apple TV 4K running tvOS 27, although the final sound quality depends on the connected equipment and the audio format being played. Apple’s support documentation says users can manage audio quality through Settings under Apps and Music.
Lossless audio compresses music files without discarding the original audio data. Apple Music offers standard lossless quality up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz across supported devices. On Apple TV 4K, Hi-Res Lossless requires compatible hardware and an appropriate audio setup; Apple notes that the device currently supports lossless playback up to 48 kHz in its general support guidance, so users should check the latest device-specific requirements.
The update also introduces AutoMix on Apple TV, allowing tracks to transition smoothly with beat matching and time stretching. Other tvOS 27 improvements include a redesigned Podcasts app, better AirPlay performance and expanded accessibility options.
For listeners who use Apple TV as the centre of their home entertainment setup, the new features offer more ways to enjoy music and podcasts. However, lossless playback uses more bandwidth than standard compressed audio, and the audible difference will depend on speakers, room conditions and individual listening preferences.
