Bihar Museum in Patna has attracted international attention after securing ninth place on Worth a Journey’s The World’s 100 Best Museums 2026 list. The travel guide also identifies it as the highest-ranked museum in Asia in this edition, bringing renewed attention to Bihar’s cultural heritage, historical collections and contemporary art exhibitions.

One of the museum’s most recognisable treasures is the Didarganj Yakshi, a sculpture carved from Chunar sandstone. Discovered at Didarganj in Patna in 1917, the 5-foot-2-inch figure is known for its polished surface, intricate details and the fly-whisk it holds. The sculpture is an important attraction for visitors interested in India’s artistic and archaeological history.

The museum’s architecture is another highlight. Designed by Maki and Associates in collaboration with Mumbai-based Opolis, the campus connects different sections through courtyards and corridors. Its design combines weathering steel with materials such as local stone, terracotta and glass, creating a contemporary setting for historical collections.

Inside, the galleries trace Bihar’s history across several periods, including the Maurya, Sunga, Kushana, Gupta and Pala eras. Visitors can also explore Patna School paintings, regional art, coins, terracotta objects and sculptures. A visible-storage section offers another way to examine selected objects and understand how collections are preserved and displayed.

The museum also caters to younger visitors through an interactive Children’s Gallery. Features such as a Grand Trunk Road map, sculpture puzzles, fossil replicas and historical storytelling activities make learning more accessible to children and families.

Contemporary art adds another dimension to the museum’s programme. The Cosmic Garden exhibition, scheduled to run from October 22 to November 15, 2026, brings together paintings and sculptures by Madhvi Parekh and Manu Parekh, alongside embroidered works by Karishma Swali and the Chanakya School of Craft. The exhibition was previously presented as a collateral event at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

The ranking places Bihar Museum on the international cultural tourism map, while its combination of archaeological heritage, modern architecture, educational spaces and contemporary art offers visitors several reasons to explore it.
