The Tamil Nadu government has approached the Supreme Court seeking urgent intervention in the ongoing Cauvery water dispute, alleging that Karnataka has not released water to the state since October 23.
During an urgent oral mentioning on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Tamil Nadu’s counsel, B. Karunakaran, brought the matter before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
Karunakaran told the court that Karnataka had failed to release the required water despite an order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The authority had directed the release of 3,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day.
The Supreme Court agreed to list Tamil Nadu’s plea early, allowing the matter to be taken up sooner.
The dispute centres on the sharing of Cauvery river water between the two neighbouring states. Tamil Nadu’s latest appeal seeks the court’s attention to the alleged non-compliance with the water-release direction.
