Democrats have vowed to challenge U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies after securing a major victory in the 2026 midterm elections. Their gains in both chambers of Congress could lead to political deadlock in Washington over the next two years.
Trump made his first public appearance after the election results by showcasing the under-construction ballroom at the White House.
The election marks a significant political setback for the Republican president. It is also the first time during his presidencies, including his earlier term from 2017 to 2021, that he will have to contend with Democrats controlling both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
According to the reported results, Democrats secured at least 54 seats in the Senate against the Republicans’ 44, gaining support in several traditionally Republican states. They also added at least 30 seats in the House of Representatives.
Anger over Trump’s policies contributed to the Democratic victory. The U.S.-Iran war and its reported impact on the cost of living were among the major issues influencing voters.
With Democrats holding control of both chambers, the administration could face stronger congressional scrutiny and resistance to its policy agenda. The shift also raises the possibility of legislative deadlock as the two parties prepare for the next two years of political confrontation.
