Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a premium laptop designed to run demanding artificial intelligence workloads directly on the device. Starting at $2,599 in the US, the new model marks a major step in the company’s push towards hybrid AI computing.
The laptop is built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform and is aimed primarily at developers, creators and AI professionals who need substantial computing power without relying entirely on cloud-based services. Microsoft says the system can run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally, with configurations offering up to 128GB of unified memory and up to one petaflop of AI performance.
The launch reflects a wider industry shift towards on-device AI processing. Running models locally can reduce dependence on remote data centres, help lower cloud computing costs and allow certain tasks to continue without an internet connection. Cloud services will still play an important role for workloads that require greater computing resources.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described this approach as “hybrid intelligence,” in which local hardware and cloud systems work together rather than operating as separate experiences. The company is also updating Windows to help AI agents operate with stronger controls over access, identity and security.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is available for pre-order, with shipments scheduled to begin on October 16, 2026. Microsoft has also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a desktop system aimed at AI developers, starting at $5,999 in the US.
Despite its advanced hardware, the laptop’s high starting price could limit its appeal among everyday consumers. Its value will depend on whether professionals can make practical use of its local AI capabilities.
