Punjab politics has witnessed a significant development ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with three leaders associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi. The leaders include Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra.
The development follows their exit from the AAP, with the leaders expressing dissatisfaction with the party's leadership and functioning. Their induction into the BJP took place at the party's headquarters in the presence of senior leaders.
The departing leaders raised concerns about issues affecting Punjab, including drug addiction, corruption, unemployment and a lack of transparency. They also alleged that their concerns regarding their constituencies were not receiving adequate attention from the AAP leadership.
The political shift comes at an important time as parties prepare for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The BJP has used the development to intensify its criticism of the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government, promising to work towards a corruption-free and drug-free Punjab.
Meanwhile, the AAP leadership maintained that the leaders had already been sidelined over alleged anti-party activities. This has added another dimension to the growing political differences between the two parties.
The departure of three leaders could become an important political challenge for the AAP as it prepares for the next Assembly elections. Their entry into the BJP also provides the opposition party an opportunity to strengthen its political presence in Punjab.
The development is likely to bring greater attention to party switching, governance issues and electoral strategies as Punjab moves towards the 2027 Assembly polls.
