Congress and the BJP are stepping up campaigning as Punjab’s 2027 Assembly election approaches and debate over voter lists continues.
Rahul Gandhi is due in Sangrur on November 4 for Congress’s “Hisab Maango” rally, which party leaders describe as the start of their Punjab campaign. They say it will focus on law and order and drug concerns, blaming the Bhagwant Mann government for failing to address them. These are Congress’s allegations.
The rally follows an INDIA bloc protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. Protesters opposed the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded the chief election commissioner’s resignation.
In Hyderabad on November 2, Union Home Minister Amit Shah joined a BJP march under the slogan “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” (“Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy”). It began near the Babu Jagjivan Ram statue. Shah accused the opposition of resisting the voter roll revision to shield illegal infiltrators.
In Bhagalpur, BJP president Nitin Nabin led a march, accusing Rahul Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav of disrespecting voters’ mandate. The charge is the BJP’s.
In Chandigarh, Punjab BJP plans a November 4 conclave called “Zakhm 84 De” on the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, the same day Gandhi is due in Sangrur.
The events put rival messages in focus: Congress is challenging AAP’s record in Punjab, while BJP is answering opposition criticism of voter roll revisions and revisiting the 1984 violence. Both parties are building visibility ahead of the state election. BJP’s outreach also reaches beyond Punjab.
