Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is expected to end his association with the National Conference (NC), marking a major development in Jammu and Kashmir politics. According to reports, he is likely to announce his resignation from both the party and the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, November 3.
Ruhullah, a three-time MLA from Budgam, has had differences with the party leadership over several political and ideological issues. These include the National Conference’s relationship with the BJP, the restoration of special status for Jammu and Kashmir and the party’s position on Article 370.
His relationship with the NC leadership has remained strained for nearly two years. Despite being elected to the Lok Sabha from Srinagar, Ruhullah has increasingly expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s political direction.
In an interview with The Indian Express, he described the National Conference as being “beyond redemption” and said he was looking to connect with people who had limited political baggage and were willing to work on the basis of principles and conviction.
Ruhullah has not yet announced his future political plans. However, his remarks suggest that he may explore a different political platform focused on the issues he considers important.
His possible departure also comes at a time when the National Conference is dealing with internal dissatisfaction following recent changes to the Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet. Several party legislators have reportedly expressed concerns over the reshuffle and the treatment of senior leaders.
If confirmed, Ruhullah’s resignation would mark a significant political development for the National Conference and could add to the challenges facing its leadership under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
