Indian wrestler Manisha Bhanwala won gold at the 2026 Wrestling World Championships, helping India achieve its best-ever medal tally in women’s wrestling at the competition.
The 29-year-old defeated Abigail Nette of the United States 8–6 in the 59 kg final. With this victory, Manisha became only the second Indian wrestler after Sushil Kumar to win a world championship title.
Her gold medal completed a historic four-medal campaign for the Indian women’s team. Kajal Dhochak secured silver in the 76 kg category, while Neelam Sirohi won silver in the 50 kg event. Tanu Sharma added a bronze medal in the 72 kg category.
Manisha’s victory came after three attempts over three days, eventually ending India’s wait for a gold medal in the women’s category at the Wrestling World Championships.
The four-medal finish surpassed India’s previous best performance in women’s wrestling at the tournament. The result also highlighted the contributions of several Indian wrestlers across different weight categories.
Manisha’s achievement adds another significant chapter to Indian wrestling, while the overall performance of the women’s team marks an important milestone for the country on the world stage.
