A bench comprising Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan heard the petition on Friday, October 30, 2026. The PIL was filed by R. Ganesh Kumar, a resident of Zamin Pallavaram in Chennai.

The petitioner has sought an inquiry into Das's background, cancellation of his passport and Aadhaar card, and blocking of his social media accounts. These demands are based on allegations that Das repeatedly made derogatory remarks against the judiciary.

The court issued notices to Das and the concerned government authorities, asking them to respond to the petition. The notices are returnable in six weeks.

Importantly, the bench did not make any findings on the allegations while issuing the notices. The matter will be considered further after the responses are received.

The case has brought attention to questions surrounding freedom of expression, criticism of the judiciary and the legal limits of actions sought against individuals through public interest litigation.

The court's decision to issue notices does not mean that the allegations have been established or that the requested cancellation of documents and blocking of social media accounts has been ordered.

Further proceedings will determine how the respondents address the claims raised in the petition.
