British Prime Minister Andy Burnham could visit India soon, as the United Kingdom and India look to strengthen their bilateral partnership and expand economic cooperation, Acting British High Commissioner to India Ben Mellor said on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Speaking to PTI, Mellor said Burnham was keen to visit India and had conveyed his interest in meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a conversation after taking office.
“I know that Prime Minister Andy Burnham is very keen to come to India,” Mellor said.
The possible visit comes as both countries pursue an ambitious trade target. India and the UK aim to double bilateral trade to approximately $120 billion by 2030, reflecting their efforts to deepen economic ties and create more opportunities for businesses.
A high-level visit could provide an opportunity to review progress towards this target and discuss areas for further cooperation. Potential areas of engagement include technology, manufacturing, services, education and investment.
Beyond trade, India and the UK have been developing cooperation in areas such as defence, innovation and education. Continued diplomatic engagement could help both sides address shared priorities and strengthen business and institutional ties.
However, the diplomat’s remarks did not include a confirmed date or detailed schedule for Burnham’s proposed visit. Further announcements would be needed to establish when the trip might take place and what issues would feature on the agenda.
If confirmed, the visit could mark another important step in India–UK relations as both governments work towards their long-term economic ambitions and seek to broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.
