Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to visit the United States from November 16 to 19, 2026, for interactions with university students and members of the Indian diaspora. The proposed visit is expected to include engagements in New York and Chicago.
The visit has triggered a political exchange between the BJP and Congress, with BJP leaders questioning the timing and frequency of Gandhi's overseas trips. According to reports, the programme has been confirmed by the Indian Overseas Congress. Gandhi is also expected to return to India before the Winter Session of Parliament.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised the upcoming visit in a social media post, using the phrase 'Rahul Gandhi Ki KamChori'. He alleged that the Congress leader spends more time abroad than in India and questioned how the party expects public support when its senior leader frequently travels overseas. Bhandari also described the proposed trip as another vacation.
BJP spokesperson RP Singh also questioned the timing of the visit and referred to Gandhi's previous overseas meetings. He raised concerns about the individuals the Congress leader meets during his foreign trips.
The criticism comes amid repeated political exchanges over Rahul Gandhi's international visits. BJP leaders have previously raised questions about the frequency, funding and purpose of his foreign travel.
Meanwhile, the upcoming US visit is expected to provide Gandhi an opportunity to interact with Indian-origin communities and students. The political debate surrounding the trip has added another point of confrontation between the BJP and Congress ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament.
