The Kerala government has constituted a 16-member high-level task force to develop an evidence-based roadmap focused on disease prevention, early detection, treatment, rehabilitation and healthy ageing.
Named the “Kerala Holistic Model for Health, Wellness and Longevity Task Force”, the panel will be headed by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, with Health Minister K. Muraleedharan as vice-chairman. Health officials, medical experts and other senior government representatives are part of the task force.
The first stage of the initiative will assess Kerala’s disease burden, ageing trends, healthcare infrastructure and gaps in access. The panel will then identify priority populations, diseases and regions that require greater attention.
The task force will also examine ways to strengthen preventive healthcare and timely screening, while exploring coordination between modern medicine and recognised traditional systems, including Ayurveda. A secure digital health system to bring health-related information together is also part of the proposed framework.
The government has asked the task force to submit an action-oriented report within two months of its first meeting. The report will include two or three pilot projects, a phased three-year action plan, estimated costs and possible funding sources. It will also outline departmental responsibilities and mechanisms to monitor implementation.
The initiative is intended to shift greater emphasis towards preventing diseases and detecting health conditions at an early stage, while addressing the needs of Kerala’s ageing population.
