Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur, near Chennai, was closed to visitors on October 22 and 23, 2026, following confirmation of H5N1 avian influenza among water birds at the facility.
The infection was confirmed by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, on October 2, according to information provided by Forest Department officials.
Seven water birds at the zoo died between October 3 and 7. The birds included four painted storks, one grey pelican, one grey heron and one oriental darter.
Zoo authorities began precautionary measures after the first bird died on October 3, cordoning off the affected area. Following confirmation of the infection, officials undertook disinfection and sanitisation measures and strengthened biosecurity protocols to contain the risk of further spread.
The temporary closure was intended to support these preventive measures and help protect the remaining animals and visitors. The zoo's reopening arrangements would depend on the relevant authorities' assessment and further instructions.
H5N1 is a strain of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, that primarily affects birds. Some avian influenza viruses can also infect mammals, including humans, although the level of risk depends on the circumstances and nature of exposure.
Health authorities generally advise the public to avoid touching sick or dead wild birds and to report unusual bird deaths to the relevant authorities.
Visitors planning to travel to Vandalur should check official zoo announcements for updated opening information before making arrangements.
