The West Bengal government has announced 140 nominees to the governing bodies of around 70 government-aided colleges across the state, according to a notification issued by the Higher Education Department on October 6, 2026.

The nominations cover colleges in several districts, including Kolkata, Bankura, North and South 24 Parganas, Purulia, Hooghly, Darjeeling, Alipurduar, Kalimpong, North Dinajpur and West Midnapore. Two government-nominated representatives have been named for each college covered by the latest list.

The announcement follows an earlier exercise to appoint governing body presidents at state-aided colleges. In August, the department announced appointments covering 247 colleges as part of a wider restructuring of college administration.

The governing bodies oversee key academic and administrative matters at the institutions. Under West Bengal’s college administration framework, government-nominated members form part of the governing body alongside other representatives.

The latest appointments have also drawn attention to the political affiliations of some nominees, with reports identifying individuals associated with the ruling BJP and affiliated organisations. The nominations come amid wider discussion about the role of political figures in the administration of higher education institutions.
