The AFI Life Achievement Award is considered one of the organisation’s highest honours for a career in film. Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, praised Cruise for his commitment to filmmaking and his belief in cinema’s ability to bring people together. She also described him as an ambassador for American films around the world.

Cruise has built a career spanning more than four decades, becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognisable stars. His filmography includes Top Gun, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Minority Report and the hugely popular Mission: Impossible franchise. As a producer, he also earned recognition for Top Gun: Maverick, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

The actor has received three Oscar nominations for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. In 2025, he received an honorary Oscar at the Academy’s Governors Awards for his contribution to cinema.

Cruise is currently starring in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film features him as Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil tycoon whose drilling disaster triggers a global environmental crisis.

With this latest honour, Cruise joins a distinguished list of previous AFI Life Achievement Award recipients, including Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman, Denzel Washington, George Clooney and Julie Andrews. Proceeds from the 2027 tribute gala will support AFI’s arts and education initiatives.
