Clayface delivers a dark, violent take on a classic DC villain’s origin story, following Matt Hagen’s transformation from an ambitious actor into a terrifying shapeshifter.

Tom Rhys Harries plays Hagen, whose promising career is destroyed after he becomes involved with the girlfriend of mob boss Markos, played by David Dencik. Markos disfigures him, leaving the actor struggling with a shattered life and future.

Hagen’s search for a way to repair his damaged skin leads him to Dr Caitlyn, portrayed by Naomi Ackie, who is researching a treatment for damaged tissue. An overdose gives him the extraordinary ability to change his appearance and assume anyone’s identity.

What follows is a revenge-driven story that explores Hagen’s increasingly disturbing transformation. The film also stands out by building its story around the villain without relying on Batman’s presence, allowing the character’s personal tragedy and descent into madness to take centre stage.

With its blood-soaked tone and focus on psychological and physical transformation, Clayface offers a gritty approach to the superhero origin-story formula.
