The Supreme Court of India has directed that the Udayasthamana pooja at Kerala’s famed Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple must be conducted strictly in line with age‑old traditions and practices.
Passing an interim order, a Bench headed by Justice Aravind Kumar emphasized that the faith and sentiments of worshippers should take precedence over administrative or management hurdles. The Court noted that rituals at Guruvayur hold immense spiritual significance for millions of devotees, and any deviation from established customs could undermine their religious sentiments.
The ruling comes amid disputes over the management of temple rituals, with concerns raised about balancing tradition with modern administrative challenges. By prioritizing worshippers’ faith, the Court reinforced its stance that religious practices, especially those deeply rooted in heritage, must be safeguarded.
Legal experts say the order highlights the judiciary’s role in protecting cultural and spiritual traditions while ensuring that management bodies respect the sanctity of religious institutions. For devotees, the decision is seen as a reassurance that their rituals will continue unchanged, preserving the temple’s legacy.
The case will continue to be heard, but the interim directive ensures that the Udayasthamana pooja remains aligned with Guruvayur’s centuries‑old practices until a final verdict is delivered.
