Former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested by Chennai Police on Monday, October 26, 2026, in connection with an alleged multi-crore rupee scam involving private school managements across the state.
The arrest came hours after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, according to the report. A special team from the Central Crime Branch (CCB), which is investigating the case, took the former minister into custody.
According to police sources, the investigation concerns allegations that several crores of rupees were collected from private school managements across Tamil Nadu in the name of a “party fund.” The case has been described in reports as an alleged ₹100-crore fraud.
Poyyamozhi served as Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister from 2021 to 2026 under the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. His arrest has drawn attention because of his former ministerial position and the scale of the allegations under investigation.
The dismissal of his anticipatory bail plea cleared the way for the police action reported on Monday. The Central Crime Branch is handling the investigation into the alleged collection of money from private educational institutions.
However, the allegations remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings. An arrest does not establish guilt, and the case will proceed through the relevant legal process.
The development adds to political and legal scrutiny surrounding the alleged collection of funds from private schools in Tamil Nadu. Further details about the investigation, the evidence gathered and any subsequent court proceedings may emerge as the case progresses.
