Karnataka is set to have its second woman Governor with the appointment of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sudha Yadav. President Droupadi Murmu announced her appointment on Monday, October 12, 2026, as part of a series of gubernatorial appointments across six states.
Yadav’s appointment marks a significant moment for Karnataka, as she will become only the second woman to hold the constitutional post in the state. The first was V.S. Rama Devi, who previously served as Karnataka Governor.
The announcement is part of a broader reshuffle involving gubernatorial appointments in six states. These appointments bring changes to the leadership of state constitutional offices and are made by the President of India.
Yadav will succeed Thaawarchand Gehlot, who has served as Karnataka Governor since July 21, 2021. Gehlot has held the position for more than five years, overseeing the constitutional responsibilities associated with the Governor’s office.
As Governor, Yadav will occupy an important constitutional position in Karnataka. The role includes performing duties outlined in the Constitution, such as appointing the Chief Minister under the applicable constitutional process, summoning and proroguing the state legislature, and giving assent to legislation in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Her appointment also places a woman in a position historically held predominantly by men in the state. While further details about the transition and assumption of office were not provided in the announcement, the appointment is expected to draw attention to Karnataka’s political and constitutional landscape.
The development comes amid changes in gubernatorial leadership across several states, following the appointments announced by the President on October 12.
