TJ&K Waqf Board Moves to Standardise Friday Sermons Across Mosques, Committee to Approve Topics
The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board has moved to introduce uniform Friday sermons across mosques in the Union Territory, with a committee of preachers expected to select topics in advance. The proposed mechanism aims to ensure that the same subject is highlighted during Friday prayers at different religious places.
The initiative was discussed during a virtual meeting held on Sunday, October 11, 2026, attended by hundreds of preachers from various districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Ishtiyaq Mohi-ud-Din, an Executive Magistrate at the Waqf Board, told participants that a directive had already been issued to preachers nearly a month earlier. Under the instruction, one common topic would be selected for the Friday khutba, or sermon, and discussed across mosques.
“Almost a month ago, a directive was issued to all the preachers to have a common khutba at all places,” Mohi-ud-Din said during the meeting, explaining that the same topic would be highlighted in the sermons.
According to the Board, the topics are to be decided and approved in advance by a committee of preachers. The approach is intended to bring greater consistency to Friday sermons throughout the Union Territory.
The Waqf Board has described the initiative as a first-of-its-kind mechanism in the country. However, the information available in the announcement does not specify the committee’s full membership, the process for selecting topics or when the system will be implemented across all mosques.
The move places the Board at the centre of a new effort to coordinate religious messaging across Jammu and Kashmir. Further details about the guidelines and their implementation may clarify how the proposed system will operate in practice.
