The Sikkim government has partnered with Google to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, with a focus on helping faculty members develop digital skills and integrate AI tools into teaching.
The collaboration was formalised through a Statement of Intent signed by the state’s Education Department and Google on October 6, 2026. Under the initiative, the Google AI Educator Series will be introduced across 15 higher and technical government colleges and Khangchendzonga State University.
The programme will provide educators with practical exposure to Google’s AI tools and their potential applications in academic settings. It aims to help faculty members improve lesson planning, strengthen classroom teaching, create more engaging learning experiences and build confidence in using emerging technologies responsibly.
Sikkim Education Minister Raju Basnet chaired a meeting with education officials and Google representatives in Gangtok, where the collaboration was discussed. Senior officials, including Education Department Principal Secretary Sandeep Tambe and Higher Education Director Ujjwal Rai, also attended.
The state government said the initiative is intended to strengthen digital capabilities across higher education institutions and help educators respond to changing student needs. The collaboration marks another step in Sikkim’s efforts to incorporate technology into education and prepare institutions for an increasingly digital learning environment.
