Professor Mahesh Kakde of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been awarded the Ramanujan Prize 2026 for his outstanding contributions to algebraic number theory.
The annual award is presented by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in association with the International Mathematical Union (IMU), to recognise exceptional mathematicians from developing countries. The prize is awarded to researchers under the age of 45 and carries a cash award of US$10,000.
Kakde is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at IISc Bengaluru, where his research focuses on algebraic number theory, a field that uses algebraic methods to study numbers and related mathematical structures.
He completed his Bachelor of Mathematics at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bengaluru before pursuing postgraduate studies and a PhD in pure mathematics at the University of Cambridge. After earning his doctorate in 2008, Kakde worked at institutions including Princeton University, University College London and King’s College London.
He joined IISc as a professor in 2019 and has since continued his research in advanced mathematics.
The Ramanujan Prize adds to Kakde’s list of academic honours. He previously received the Infosys Prize in Mathematical Sciences in 2022, along with other recognition for his research.
His latest achievement highlights the contribution of Indian researchers to contemporary mathematical sciences and further recognises IISc Bengaluru’s role in advanced mathematics research.
