Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has accused Ryanair staff at Dublin Airport of behaving in a discriminatory and threatening manner towards him and his family during a recent travel experience.

In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, October 28, Sangakkara described his experience with the airline’s gate personnel as unacceptable. He alleged that the staff used an inappropriate tone and mishandled procedures while dealing with his family.

The former cricketer also claimed that the incident involved remarks about the type of passports they held, which he described as discriminatory.

The issue gained further attention after a social media user accused Sangakkara of expecting preferential treatment. The user argued that treating all passengers equally should not be considered discrimination simply because someone is accustomed to special privileges.

Sangakkara strongly rejected the criticism and explained why he believed the incident went beyond ordinary airport procedures.

He alleged that staff told them that people with passports like theirs should expect such treatment. He further claimed that when they challenged the remark, they were warned that they could be considered a threat to other passengers and might not be allowed to board the flight.

Sangakkara described the alleged comment as racist and maintained that his complaint was about discriminatory treatment rather than a demand for special privileges.

He also said it was his first negative experience in Dublin, expressing disappointment over how he and his family were treated.

The incident has sparked discussion on social media about discrimination, passenger rights and the treatment of international travellers at airports.

However, the allegations remain Sangakkara’s account of the incident. Any response or explanation from Ryanair would be necessary to establish the airline’s position on the matter.
