Joshi said the discussions included implementing memorandums of understanding announced during engagements between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The talks also covered revitalising higher education ties, expanding research partnerships and facilitating the entry of Canadian universities into India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The proposed areas of cooperation could create opportunities for students, researchers and universities in both countries. Greater academic collaboration can support research exchanges, knowledge-sharing and institutional partnerships while helping universities explore new approaches to international education.

The meeting comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen India-Canada educational ties. In February 2026, representatives from 24 Canadian universities met Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to explore research collaborations and the possibility of establishing international campuses in India.

The latest discussions highlight the role of higher education in developing bilateral relations, with university partnerships and student mobility remaining key areas of focus.
