Oscar-winning actor Eva Marie Saint has died at the age of 102 in Los Angeles. Her representative, Jeff Sanderson, said she died of natural causes at her home, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Saint became one of Hollywood’s most respected performers after making her film debut in Elia Kazan’s 1954 classic On the Waterfront. Her performance as Edie Doyle opposite Marlon Brando earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and established her as a major screen talent.
She followed the success with Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest in 1959, starring opposite Cary Grant as a mysterious double agent. Her film career also included roles in Exodus, All Fall Down and other notable productions.
Despite having opportunities for greater Hollywood stardom, Saint chose to step away from the spotlight at times to focus on her family. She was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016. The couple had two children.
Saint continued acting across television and film for decades. She won an Emmy Award in 1990 for the miniseries People Like Us and later returned to the big screen in Superman Returns in 2006, playing Martha Kent.
Her later credits included Winter’s Tale and Mariette in Ecstasy. With a career spanning more than seven decades, Saint remained associated with some of classic Hollywood’s most acclaimed films and performances.
