The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) released a series of fact‑checks on Monday, countering claims about changes to Form 6, the voter registration document at the centre of a heated political debate.
The clarification followed remarks by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who distanced the Supreme Court from any modifications to Form 6. Soon after, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar of “illegally and unilaterally” altering the form, saying it was now “established beyond doubt” that the changes were unconstitutional.
In its September 26 press release, the ECI maintained that the declaration form attached to Form 6 had been upheld by the apex court, rejecting allegations of impropriety. The Commission also addressed reports of dissent within its ranks, insisting that the modifications were consistent with legal provisions.
The controversy has triggered a political slugfest, with opposition parties demanding accountability and transparency from the poll panel. The fact‑check exercise is seen as an attempt by the ECI to restore public confidence amid growing criticism of its functioning under the Central Vista of electoral reforms.
