A planned two‑day visit by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and senior officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to Chhattisgarh has been postponed due to “unavoidable reasons,” according to a government order issued on Tuesday.
The visit, originally scheduled for October 7–8, was expected to include meetings with state officials and reviews of electoral preparedness. However, the postponement comes at a time when Kumar is facing mounting criticism over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which opposition parties allege has been mishandled.
Sources indicated that the ECI team was to travel from Delhi to Raipur to oversee the progress of voter list updates and assess ground‑level challenges. The delay has sparked speculation about whether the criticism surrounding the SIR exercise influenced the decision.
Kumar, who has been under scrutiny for weeks, has defended the Commission’s actions, insisting that all procedures are being carried out in accordance with law. Still, the controversy has added pressure on the poll panel ahead of upcoming elections in several states.
The rescheduling of the Chhattisgarh visit is expected to be announced soon, with officials emphasizing that the Commission remains committed to ensuring transparency and credibility in the electoral process.
