BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the judiciary should stay above everyday political battles and accused Rahul Gandhi of turning constitutional issues into political theatre.

In a post on social media platform X, Bhatia said the CJI’s decision not to meet Gandhi and other Opposition leaders sent an important message about maintaining the judiciary’s independence.

“Constitutional institutions cannot be dragged into political theatrics,” Bhatia said, reiterating the BJP’s position that judicial institutions must remain separate from political competition.

He also criticised Gandhi’s approach to constitutional matters, arguing that carrying a copy of the Constitution did not necessarily mean understanding its principles.

“Read it. Respect it. And learn the doctrine of separation of powers,” Bhatia said.

The BJP spokesperson further accused the Congress leader of confusing constitutional law with political messaging. His remarks centred on the principle of separation of powers, which distinguishes the responsibilities of the legislature, executive and judiciary.

The controversy has added another point of confrontation between the BJP and Congress, with both parties continuing to disagree over political and constitutional issues.

The CJI’s reported decision not to hold the requested meeting has become the focus of the latest exchange between the ruling party and the Opposition.

The episode highlights the ongoing political debate over the relationship between elected representatives and constitutional institutions, particularly the importance of judicial independence and maintaining institutional boundaries.
