Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi approached the Supreme Court on Monday, October 12, 2026, seeking an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Gandhi visited the Supreme Court Registry alongside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to file the petition. Other Opposition leaders who joined the plea included Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.
The petition raises concerns over alleged large-scale deletions of voters’ names and irregularities in the electoral roll revision process. The Opposition leaders are seeking an independent examination of the decision-making process surrounding the SIR exercise.
The development marks a fresh escalation in the political dispute over electoral roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The legal move came a day after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined Gandhi’s request for a meeting with him and other Opposition representatives. According to sources cited in reports, the request was rejected because the issues likely to be discussed were already pending before the Supreme Court.
The Opposition’s decision to approach the court formally shifts the dispute into the judicial arena, where the allegations and requests for investigation can be considered through legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced that entry and exit gates at all stations across the Delhi Metro network had reopened, following restrictions linked to the protests in the national capital.
The petition is expected to draw further attention to questions surrounding electoral transparency, voter registration and safeguards against wrongful deletions from electoral rolls.
