The Union Cabinet has approved a major change to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, allowing the 75% of Agniveers not selected for regular service after their initial four-year tenure to undertake an additional two years of engagement in the armed forces.
The decision, announced by Chief of Defence Staff General N. S. Raja Subramani on November 4, 2026, creates an additional pathway for Agniveers seeking regular military service. Under the revised arrangement, the initial provision allowing up to 25% of each batch to enter the regular cadre based on merit will continue.
The remaining 75% will be eligible for the two-year extension, subject to the applicable conditions. After completing the extended period, those willing to continue can be considered for regular enrolment, provided they meet the prescribed selection criteria. Permanent absorption is therefore not automatic for every Agniveer.
The extended engagement is also expected to include enhanced remuneration, an improved Seva Nidhi package and seniority-related benefits, according to reports on the revised scheme.
The announcement comes as the first batch of Agniveers, recruited in 2022, approaches the end of its original four-year tenure. Around 18,000 personnel from the first batch were expected to complete their initial service period by December 2026.
The government has also announced changes to the recruitment process, including conducting the written examination before the physical test. Skill certificates are intended to formally recognise the training and experience Agniveers gain during service.
The revised framework gives eligible recruits additional time to serve and demonstrate their capabilities before consideration for regular military employment. Detailed implementation rules will determine how the new provisions apply across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
