At least three people were killed and several others injured in a gunfight between rival Naga insurgent groups at Taodaijang village, also known as Buanruang, in Manipur's Noney district on November 5, 2026. Some reports put the death toll at four.
The pre-dawn exchange of fire took place under the jurisdiction of Nungba police station and reportedly continued for several hours. The groups involved included the Jenchui faction of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-J), the Kamson faction (ZUF-K) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM).
According to local claims attributed to ZUF-J, two of the deceased belonged to its faction and were identified as M Thaimei and G Kamson. A third person was reportedly a resident of Pungmon Chingchen village. Reports also indicated that up to six people sustained injuries. The identities and final casualty figures were yet to be consistently established in the available accounts.
As the firing continued, members of the Rongmei Naga Luphuam, an apex women's organisation, reportedly reached the area and appealed to the armed groups through public address systems to stop the violence.
Following the clash, more than 500 security personnel from the Manipur Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA commandos and Assam Rifles were deployed for cordon-and-search operations in the Nungba and Kekru Naga areas. The operation aimed to verify identities and restore order.
Meanwhile, the Manipur government ordered the formation of District Level Peace Committees across all districts. Led by District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police, the committees are expected to facilitate community dialogue, address misinformation and support efforts to restore communal harmony.
