The United States is heading into its November 3, 2026, midterm elections, with forecasting models pointing towards potential gains for the Democratic Party in Congress.
According to a forecasting model cited in the report, Democrats could secure 230 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. The projection also suggests that Democrats could win 18 of the 35 Senate seats being contested in this election.
Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, although their majorities are narrow. In the House, Republicans hold 218 seats compared with 214 for Democrats. One seat is held by an independent, while two seats are vacant.
In the Senate, Republicans hold 53 seats, while Democrats have 45. Two independent senators caucus with the Democrats.
The midterm elections take place halfway through President Donald Trump's second term and will determine the balance of power in Congress for the next two years.
All 435 House seats are being contested because members serve two-year terms. In the Senate, elections are held on a staggered basis, with approximately one-third of the chamber's seats going to voters every two years. This year, 35 Senate seats are up for election.
A Democratic gain in either chamber could change the political balance in Washington and influence the legislative agenda during the remainder of Trump's term.
However, the figures are projections rather than confirmed results. Different forecasting models have produced varying estimates of the likely outcome, and the final balance of power will depend on the votes cast on November 3.
