Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) has reportedly submitted its response to the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner over complaints concerning governance and administration at the trust. The development comes amid growing tensions within Tata Trusts and disagreements over decisions involving Tata Sons.

According to media reports, SDTT was initially asked to respond by October 12 but later received an extension until October 19. The contents of its submission have not been made public, leaving the regulator’s next steps uncertain.

The complaints were reportedly raised by Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh, both trustees of SDTT and vice-chairmen of Tata Trusts. They questioned whether the trust was becoming involved in Tata Sons’ commercial decisions instead of remaining focused on its philanthropic responsibilities. Their concerns also included the perpetual trusteeship of Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, and calls for an examination of the trust’s governance.

The matter gained attention after a September 17 Tata Sons board meeting, where trustees and nominee directors reportedly disagreed over the reappointment of chairman N Chandrasekaran and the company’s listing. Srinivasan supported a third term for Chandrasekaran and the listing proposal, while Noel Tata opposed the moves and used his veto to block the reappointment.

The dispute also raised questions about voting procedures under Tata Sons’ Articles of Association, with differing legal interpretations reported over the use of a casting vote.

The Charity Commissioner’s response to SDTT’s submission could influence the next stage of the matter. However, no final regulatory outcome has been established in the information currently available.
