Asked about the prospects of a deal, Trump said India wanted an agreement and added that the two sides were “pretty close”. He also suggested that the final arrangement could take a different form, without providing further details.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently expressed similar confidence during his visit to Mumbai. He said the two countries were close to completing negotiations, with only a limited number of issues left to resolve. Rubio indicated that an announcement could follow once the agreement is finalised and signed by the leaders.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has also said that the broad framework and major elements of the proposed agreement were in place. However, he noted that some details and potential new concerns could still emerge during the final stages of discussions.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also expressed encouragement over the progress, saying both countries were moving towards an agreement.

Separately, Trump waived the implementation of certain proposed tariffs and restrictions targeting buyers of Russian oil and gas, according to the report. The move offered potential relief to countries including India and China.

Despite the positive signals, the trade deal has not yet been formally concluded. Its final terms, timing and implications for businesses will depend on the outcome of the remaining negotiations.
