Reliance Jio is exploring satellite broadband as a way to expand digital connectivity in India, Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani has said, outlining the company’s plans as its parent platform moves ahead with its initial public offering (IPO).

In an interview with Business Standard, Ambani said Jio’s broader vision is to make digital services accessible to every Indian through reliable, high-quality connectivity at affordable prices.

He noted that conventional telecom networks already cover around 99% of India’s population, but satellite technology can serve specific needs that ground-based networks may not fully address. These include connectivity in remote areas, as well as services for aviation and maritime operations.

Ambani emphasised that satellite connectivity would complement existing mobile and broadband networks rather than replace them.

The company is evaluating the possibility of developing an Indian low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. It is also considering partnerships as it explores the long-term opportunity to build domestic satellite connectivity capabilities.

However, Jio has not announced a launch timeline. Ambani said the schedule would depend on several factors, including technological progress and regulatory approvals.

The plans come amid growing competition in India’s satellite internet market, including interest from Elon Musk’s Starlink. Reliance Jio has previously said it welcomes competition but expects all companies to follow India’s laws and regulatory requirements.

Ambani also described the Jio Platforms IPO as an important milestone for the country’s telecom sector, offering investors an opportunity to assess how connectivity, technology and digital services contribute to economic value.
