The Supreme Court of India has issued sweeping directives to curb sexual offences across Delhi‑NCR, ordering enhanced patrolling near schools, strict verification of cab drivers, and real‑time monitoring of vehicle‑tracking and SOS systems.

The directions follow the Court’s September 28 suo motu order after a spate of rape cases in the region. A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran observed that recurring sexual crimes in public spaces raise serious concerns about whether existing safety measures — such as anti‑eve‑teasing squads — are being implemented with adequate consistency, supervision, and accountability.

The Court made the Delhi Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner personally responsible for filing periodic compliance reports, warning that they would be held “answerable” for any lapses. It also directed action against establishments serving liquor unlawfully, linking such violations to unsafe environments for women and minors.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s growing impatience with systemic failures in ensuring women’s safety. By tightening accountability and mandating proactive policing, the Court aims to restore public confidence in law enforcement and deter offenders.

For Delhi residents, the measures represent a renewed push to make schools, public transport, and urban spaces safer, while placing responsibility squarely on authorities to deliver results.
