Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has urged Indian professionals working in the United States to consider returning home and contributing to India’s technology sector, following the US administration’s suspension of nine technology companies from the Permanent Labour Certification Programme (PERM).
In a post on X on October 9, Vembu said Indian professionals had contributed significantly to America’s technological growth but now faced uncertainty over their future. He encouraged them to return to India and help build the country’s technology ecosystem.
US Action Raises Concerns for IT Companies
The suspension affects major technology companies, including Microsoft, TCS, Infosys and Wipro, according to reports. US officials have argued that the programme’s use by some employers has disadvantaged American workers. Microsoft and Adobe were also reportedly included amid federal investigations.
PERM is a key step in the employment-based green card process for many foreign workers. Restrictions on participating employers could complicate immigration plans for affected professionals and create uncertainty for companies that rely on international talent.
Can India Benefit From Returning Talent?
Vembu also addressed concerns about India’s long-standing brain drain, arguing that countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan continued developing even as their professionals sought opportunities abroad.
For India, the debate highlights both a challenge and an opportunity. Attracting experienced professionals back home could strengthen technology businesses, entrepreneurship and research. However, sustained talent retention will also depend on competitive salaries, research infrastructure, access to capital and opportunities to build globally competitive companies.
The developments could influence future hiring strategies, workforce planning and the movement of skilled professionals between India and the United States.
