Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Ray Gunn, Brad Bird’s long-awaited animated detective film featuring Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Waits.
Set in Metropia, an alternate future inspired by the visual language of 1939, the film follows private investigator Raymond Gunn as he is pulled into a dangerous case involving murder, aliens and Venus Nova, a hugely popular multimedia star facing growing public scandals.
Rockwell voices Ray, a weary detective whose profession has been largely overtaken by technology. Tiny machines called “pry bots” now handle much of the investigative work, leaving Ray and his one-eyed alien partner Eyera among the few private investigators still working the old-fashioned way.
Johansson voices Venus, whose celebrity places her at the centre of a mystery involving people from her inner circle, record-company executives and Metropia’s criminal underworld.
The trailer blends classic hard-boiled detective elements with futuristic technology, alien characters and a distinctive retro animation style. Bird, known for films such as The Incredibles and Ratatouille, brings a noir-inspired approach to the science-fiction setting.
With its unusual visual world and star-studded voice cast, Ray Gunn combines murder mystery, science fiction and classic detective storytelling for its Netflix debut.
