Heavy rain and thunderstorms brought cooler conditions to Delhi-NCR on Monday morning, leaving some residents with blocked noses, sneezing and scratchy throats. The sudden change in weather may contribute to respiratory discomfort, although these symptoms can also result from allergies, infections or other causes.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperatures of around 31–35 degrees Celsius in the coming days. While the cooler morning weather may feel pleasant, changes in temperature and humidity can irritate the nose and throat in some people.
A blocked nose can occur when the lining of the nasal passages becomes inflamed and swollen. Changes in temperature, exposure to allergens and increased humidity may aggravate symptoms, particularly among people prone to allergies. A dry or scratchy throat can also develop due to irritation or mouth breathing caused by nasal congestion.
Several simple measures may help relieve mild symptoms. Drinking enough water and having warm fluids can soothe throat discomfort. Saline nasal sprays or drops may help loosen mucus and ease congestion. Resting and avoiding smoke, dust and other known irritants can also be beneficial.
Inhaling warm, moist air may provide temporary comfort, but avoid leaning over boiling water because it can cause serious burns. A clean humidifier may be another option if indoor air is dry.
Weather-related irritation often improves within a short period, but symptoms should not automatically be dismissed as temporary or unrelated to infection. Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen, persist, or occur with high fever, significant facial pain or breathing difficulties. Severe breathing problems require urgent medical attention.
