Opposition leaders gathered at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence for a hi-tea meeting on Tuesday following the INDIA bloc’s march to the Supreme Court. Discussions were expected to focus on a joint strategy for continuing protests over alleged vote theft and irregularities in electoral rolls.
The meeting comes amid growing political tensions over the Election Commission of India’s functioning and demonstrations targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, three Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders — Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde — were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday while attempting to enter Jantar Mantar.
Ratna Singh, associated with the CJP’s legal wing, alleged that the detained leaders and others were prevented from meeting their lawyer by the station house officer of Jaffarpur Kalan police station. She also claimed that their mobile phones had been confiscated. These allegations were not independently verified in the report.
The developments follow protests held on October 10 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, which prompted legal challenges concerning demonstrations, transport disruptions and the closure of metro stations.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday postponed until Thursday, October 15, the hearing on petitions related to the protests and alleged disruptions. The hearing was deferred because Justice V. Mohana was indisposed.
The Union government also informed the Supreme Court that its response to petitions alleging illegal detentions and the shutdown of public and rail transport in Delhi was ready but required further refinement.
The opposition meeting is expected to shape the INDIA bloc’s next steps as parties consider how to pursue their concerns over electoral processes and the handling of protests.
The legal proceedings and the government’s response are likely to remain central to the dispute in the coming days.
