The recent correction in select pharma stocks could offer an opportunity for medium- to long-term investors, according to Kranthi Bathini, Equity Strategist at WealthMills Securities. His comments come as pharmaceutical companies respond to a mix of regulatory developments, product updates and business-specific news.
Bathini said the pharma and healthcare sectors have delivered a strong rally over the past 12 to 18 months. Hospital stocks have also recorded significant gains, with several counters managing to retain much of their momentum despite recent market volatility.
According to the analyst, the latest weakness in some pharma shares appears to be more sentiment-driven than a sign of a broader deterioration in the sector. He expects the underlying momentum in pharma and healthcare to remain relevant over the medium to long term.
Several companies are currently facing stock-specific developments. Cipla has come under pressure after the Maharashtra FDA cancelled the drug sale and distribution licences of its Pune warehouse following regulatory findings.
Meanwhile, Sun Pharma has received attention following positive updates related to its alopecia treatment, while Piramal Pharma has announced that its commercial arrangement with Bayer will end in December. Aurobindo Pharma is also in focus following an acquisition involving a contract research services business.
Bathini believes such developments can create short-term volatility without necessarily changing the broader sector outlook. He said investors with a medium- to long-term horizon could view periods of consolidation or decline as potential entry points.
However, individual pharma stocks remain exposed to company-specific regulatory, product and earnings risks, making stock-level analysis important rather than relying solely on the sector trend.
