Air travel is set to become more expensive as IndiGo increases its fuel charges on domestic and international routes from October 6, citing a sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
The airline announced on October 5 that the revised fuel charges will apply to all new bookings made after 00:01 hours on October 6, 2026. The additional charge will range from ₹375 to ₹1,300 for domestic sectors, while international flights will attract an increase of ₹1,000 to ₹10,000.
The move comes after ATF prices rose to around ₹137 per litre from approximately ₹121 per litre following the latest revision by oil marketing companies. ATF prices had already increased by ₹5 per litre in August and ₹6.28 per litre in September.
IndiGo said the latest month-on-month increase of more than 14% has pushed aviation fuel costs to among their highest levels in the past decade. The airline attributed the sustained volatility to rising global fuel prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Fuel is a major component of airline operating costs, making sustained increases in ATF prices a significant pressure on carriers. IndiGo said a much larger increase would have been required to fully offset the higher fuel expense, but it opted for a relatively measured adjustment to limit the impact on passengers.
The latest revision means travellers booking IndiGo flights during the festive season could face higher overall ticket costs.
