An anti-drug activist known for exposing the alleged illegal sale of addictive medicines at chemist shops was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, police said.
The victim, Parvinder Singh, popularly known as Jhota, was reportedly confronting a medical store owner over the sale of certain drugs to a man when the incident occurred. Singh was also recording the argument on his mobile phone when he was shot.
According to the initial information provided by police, the confrontation centred on the alleged sale of medicines that Singh believed required scrutiny. His efforts to challenge suspected irregularities at chemist shops had made him known as an anti-drug activist.
The shooting has raised serious concerns about the risks faced by people who attempt to expose the alleged illegal distribution of addictive substances. It has also drawn attention to the need for effective enforcement against the unauthorised sale of medicines and the protection of those reporting suspected violations.
The incident took place in Mansa, a district in Punjab, where the activist had reportedly been questioning the medical store owner about the transaction. The circumstances escalated into a shooting, leaving Singh fatally wounded.
Police confirmed Singh’s death, but the initial report did not provide further details about the suspect’s identity, whether an arrest had been made or the specific circumstances immediately following the shooting.
Further investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation.
The killing has brought renewed focus to Punjab’s ongoing concerns about addictive drugs and the importance of investigating allegations of illegal medicine sales through lawful channels.
