Greta Gerwig is bringing a fresh interpretation of C.S. Lewis’s fantasy universe to the screen with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The first trailer offers a glimpse of a magical world shaped by music, unusual imagery and a reimagined setting, while introducing major characters played by Meryl Streep and Emma Mackey.

The film marks the first screen adaptation of Lewis’s 1955 novel, which explores the creation of Narnia and the origins of some of its most familiar mysteries. Three earlier Narnia films reached theatres: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005, Prince Caspian in 2008 and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010.

One of the trailer’s most striking features is its use of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. The song accompanies glimpses of the fantasy world and helps establish the film’s distinctive atmosphere. According to reports, the track’s inclusion marks the first time the band has licensed the song for a movie. Gerwig reportedly met Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to seek permission, with the musicians said to have connected with the story’s emotional core.

The trailer also offers a glimpse of Emma Mackey as Jadis, the character who eventually becomes the White Witch. An image released by Empire shows Jadis screaming on a historic street as windows shatter and cars crumple around her. The sequence hints at the destructive power she brings into the story and suggests that her arrival in this world will have far-reaching consequences.

Another major talking point is Aslan, voiced by Meryl Streep. The great lion appears as a cosmic presence, with differently coloured eyes and red markings reportedly inspired by David Bowie. The trailer shows Aslan taking on his powerful lion form against a backdrop of stars, accompanied by Stairway to Heaven. The combination of music, celestial imagery and a familiar character signals a distinctive visual approach to the beloved fantasy world.

The film’s period setting also differs from the early-1900s backdrop of Lewis’s original story. Gerwig’s adaptation is set in 1955, the year the novel was published. Set photographs featuring vintage cars, double-decker buses and a variety poster dated August 5, 1955, provide a glimpse of the period atmosphere being recreated for the film.

Although The Magician’s Nephew was the sixth book published in The Chronicles of Narnia, it takes place first in the series’ fictional chronology. The novel explains how Narnia came into existence, explores the origins of the White Witch and reveals the story behind the lamppost that stands in the snowy forest.

The story follows Digory and Polly, two children who discover magical rings that allow them to travel between different worlds. Their journey takes them to the Wood between the Worlds, a mysterious place connecting numerous realms. They eventually witness the creation of Narnia, setting in motion events that shape the kingdom’s future.

The official film description presents Gerwig’s adaptation as a sweeping adventure intended for audiences of different ages, bringing Lewis’s story of Narnia’s creation to the screen for the first time. With its unusual musical choice, reimagined characters and 1955 setting, the trailer suggests that the filmmaker is seeking to give the classic fantasy a distinct identity while retaining the central mythology that readers know.
