Patekar reportedly died following a suspected cardiac arrest, according to a Press Trust of India report citing a doctor at the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Born in Maharashtra in 1951, Patekar made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978. He went on to establish himself as one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive performers, known for his intense screen presence, powerful dialogue delivery and portrayals of complex characters.

His notable films included Parinda and Krantiveer. He also gained international recognition through Mira Nair’s Oscar-nominated Salaam Bombay!

Patekar was a three-time National Film Award winner and was honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for his contribution to the arts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, describing Patekar as an actor whose intensity, individuality and versatility left a lasting impression. Actor Akshay Kumar also remembered him as a rare performer whose presence could command attention without excessive effort.

Over the years, Patekar worked alongside several leading Bollywood actors, including Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, and demonstrated his range across serious, dramatic and comic roles.

His death marks the loss of one of Indian cinema’s most recognisable and respected performers.
